Malaise trap
************
Malaise samples processing within `Biodiversity Genomics Europe `_
project
follow the 'Invertebrate characterization
from bulk arthropod samples' SOP (Najera-Cortazar et al., 2026)
(`hosted in WorkflowHub `_).
*The core of this SOP is
based on the* `FAVIS protocol (Iwaszkiewicz-Eggebrecht et al., 2023; hosted in protocols.io)
`_, *with modifications.*

Remove EtOH
-----------
**Before the DNA extraction, the EtOH must be removed from the Malaise trap samples.**
1. Open the Malaise trap bottle.
2. Place nylon mesh cloth over the opening of the bottle
and use the screw-on seal (with open top) or rubber-band to secure the mesh in place.
3. Pour out the preservative EtOH from the bottle, into the ethanol receiving container.
Gently rotate the bottle as necessary to facilitate the draining of ethanol.
4. Turn the bottle upside down and let it rest in the funnel, so that the ethanol continues to drain.
5. Drain the sample for ~ 35 minutes.
6. Carefully remove the seal from the Malaise trap bottle and push the mesh into the bottle.
7. Close the Malaise trap bottle with its original bottle cap.
Optinally weigh the samples (to get the wet-weigh insect biomass),
proceed with :ref:`DNA extraction `.
